In fact, Microsoft is a contender alongside Apple/Beats with the Surface Headphones. In another move into Apple territory, Microsoft is reported to be working on Surface earbuds that will directly rival AirPods. Multiple sources collected in a report by Thurrott point to plans for earbuds currently being developed under the codename Morrison. Microsoft believes its audio technology now allows it to directly compete with more established rivals. Of course, the company has made earbuds before, selling the peripheral for its ill-fated Zune music player. However, any new launch will be the first in-ear phones to come with Microsoft’s Surface branding. They will also create a range alongside the Surface Headphones.

Details

We know this hardware won’t arrive with the name Morrison (a reference to Doors front-man Jim Morrison maybe?). Instead, the name Surface Buds seems to be gathering pace amongst Microsoft watchers. We guess Microsoft will load the Surface Buds with similar features as the Surface Headphones. That means we can expect noise cancellation, Cortana integration, and improved phone audio. And yes, you can also expect the Surface Buds to have a monster price tag like their headphone stablemate. As for launch, nothing is anywhere near official yet. A good guess would be a Surface event at the end of the year alongside an updated Surface Book.
