“Microsoft Classroom Pen 2 is optimized for use with Surface Go and Surface Pro and enables students of all ages to write and draw naturally on their screens via an improved design and longer enclosure,” Microsoft’s Lauren Ryland says in a blog post. “The durable pen tip is replaceable, and it’s easy to prevent loss with a built-in slot for a tether or the clip that attaches to Surface Type Covers. And even with those improvements, the Classroom Pen 2 is only half the cost of the original.” The main difference here seems to be a longer enclosure and a more affordable $19.99 price tag. Microsoft previously wanted a rather steep $39.99 for the original version.
Improvements
Microsoft has previously called the Classroom Pen 2 a “reimagining” of the first model. Since that original 2019 launch, the company has improved the technology underpinning the experience. For example, with the second iteration the company has added a slot to secure the pen. You’ll also notice the design of the Classroom Pen now resembles the Surface Pen much more than the original model. Still, it remains a cost-effective smart pen solution at just $20. Microsoft also sells packs of the pens to educators for $400 for 20. In the box, you get batteries, and some replacement pen tips.
