In a recent post, Microsoft has reiterated that Windows 10 20H2 is being delivered like a service pack. Specifically, the company will be rolling it out as an enablement package. The latest Windows 10 version was yesterday made available to enterprise and commercial users for testing. This follow the timeline Microsoft usually maintains for its second half of the year Windows updates. Each yes, Microsoft launches its H2 update in October and finalizes the build through August and September. It seems Windows 10 20H2 is following a similar trajectory to public release. Microsoft says early testers in enterprise will need to be running Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004) and the June 2020 Cumulative quality update.
Coming Soon
The build is now feature locked for final preparations. This means Microsoft will not add any more new features to the preview. Instead, the focus is on ensuring 20H2 arrives with as few bugs and security holes as possible. Windows 10 20H2 will be a relatively minor update when comparing to usual feature bumps. It also marks a continuation of Microsoft experimenting with its release cycles. Microsoft announced last year a dramatic change to its update schedule. The company said it will reduce main feature updates to once a year. Microsoft quickly changed its mind after customers reacted negatively to the proposal. While 20H2 is not taking such a drastic path, it could signal a switch to the second half of the year updates being more about quality control.
